The washer detected too many suds and is adding extra rinses. Too much detergent or non-HE detergent is almost always the cause.

Likely causes

Listed from most to least common.

  1. Non-HE detergent used
  2. Too much detergent for the load size
  3. No-splash or easy-pour liquid chlorine bleach
  4. Detergent residue left in the washer
  5. Drain hose kinked or clogged, slowing suds removal

How to fix the Sud code

  1. Step 1: Let the cycle finish

The washer pauses and adds water to break down the suds. The cycle takes longer, but this is normal.

  2. Step 2: Switch to HE detergent

Use only detergent with the HE logo. Measure it for the load size and follow the label.

  3. Step 3: Change the bleach

If you use no-splash or easy-pour liquid chlorine bleach, switch to regular liquid bleach.

  4. Step 4: Run Clean Washer

If the code still shows with the right detergent, run a Clean Washer cycle to remove built-up residue.

When to call a technician

No repair is usually needed. Call a technician only if Sud appears with HE detergent after a Clean Washer cycle and the drain hose is clear.

Models this applies to

  • Front-load washers (MHW series, including Maxima)
  • Top-load HE washers (MVW series, including Bravos)
  • Older Centennial top-load washers with electronic controls

Codes can differ slightly between models. Your owner's manual is the final word and is available from Maytag support.

Common questions

›Can I use regular detergent in my Maytag HE washer?

No. Regular detergent makes too many suds in low-water HE washers. Use HE detergent only.

›Will Sud damage my washer?

Not usually. The washer extends the rinse to clear the suds. Repeated oversudsing can leave residue and odors over time.
