The washer is taking too long to fill. Closed taps, kinked fill hoses or a drain hose pushed too far into the standpipe are the usual causes.
Likely causes
Listed from most to least common.
- Hot or cold water tap closed or only partly open
- Fill hoses kinked or not connected
- Anti-flood device in the water line limiting flow
- Drain hose more than 4.5 inches into the standpipe, so the washer siphons
- Clogged inlet filter screens
- Faulty water inlet valve
How to fix the F8E1 code
Unplug the washer or switch it off at the breaker before removing any panel or filter.
Step 1: Open both taps
Turn the hot and cold taps behind the washer fully on. Maytag washers need both supplies connected and on.
Step 2: Check the fill hoses
Make sure neither hose is kinked, crushed or frozen. Remove any anti-flood device fitted in the line.
Step 3: Check the drain hose depth
Only about 4.5 inches of the drain hose should be inside the standpipe. Use the U-shaped hose form and do not tape the hose into the drain.
Step 4: Clean the inlet screens
Turn off the water, unplug the washer and remove the hoses at the back. Rinse the mesh screens and refit.
Step 5: Clear the code and restart
Press Start/Pause once to clear the code (Pause/Cancel twice, then Power on front-load models). Start the cycle again.
You'll need: Needle-nose pliers, towel, bucket.

When to call a technician
If both taps are open, the hoses are clear and the drain hose is set correctly but the washer still will not fill, the inlet valve needs testing.
A typical repair for this code costs $120–$280 in the US, including parts and labor. Prices vary by area and model.
Models this applies to
- Front-load washers (MHW series, including Maxima)
- Top-load HE washers (MVW series, including Bravos)
- Older Centennial top-load washers with electronic controls
Codes can differ slightly between models. Your owner's manual is the final word and is available from Maytag support.
Common questions
›Are LF, Lo FL and F8 E1 the same on a Maytag washer?
Yes. Maytag uses all three for a slow or long fill. The fix is the same.
›Why does a drain hose cause a fill error?
If the hose goes too deep into the standpipe, water siphons out while the washer fills. It never reaches the right level, so the washer times out.
