The washer took too long to drain, usually over 8 minutes. A clogged pump filter, a kinked hose or a poor drain hose setup is the usual cause.
Likely causes
Listed from most to least common.
- Drain pump filter clogged (front-load models)
- Drain hose kinked or blocked
- Drain hose more than 4.5 inches into the standpipe
- Drain hose end higher than 96 inches
- Too many suds from non-HE detergent
- Drain pump failed
How to fix the F9E1 code
Unplug the washer or switch it off at the breaker before removing any panel or filter.
Step 1: Unplug and prepare for water
Unplug the washer and lay towels and a shallow pan in front of it.
Step 2: Clean the drain pump filter
On front-load models, open the access panel at the bottom front. Turn the filter slowly counterclockwise, let the water run out, clear any debris and refit it securely.
Step 3: Check the drain hose
Remove kinks and clogs. Only about 4.5 inches of hose should be in the standpipe, and the hose end should be no higher than 96 inches.
Step 4: Use HE detergent
Excess suds slow draining. Use only HE detergent and measure it for the load size.
Step 5: Run Drain and Spin
Plug the washer in and run Drain and Spin to confirm it drains normally.
You'll need: Towels, shallow pan, flashlight.
