Haier air conditioner FL code: water tank full (portable)
- Urgency
- Low
- Who can fix it
- Easy DIY
- Time
- About 15 min
- Repair cost
- No repair needed
On Haier portable air conditioners, FL means the internal water tank (chassis) is full of condensate, so the unit has stopped. Haier says to drain the water and restart the unit.
Likely causes
Listed from most to least common.
- Condensate built up in very humid weather
- Running in Dehumidify mode without a continuous drain hose
- Drain plug or hose blocked
- Unit not level, so water collects at one end
- Water level float stuck
How to fix the FL code
Unplug the air conditioner or switch it off at the breaker before removing any panel or filter.
Step 1: Turn off and unplug
Switch the unit off and unplug it before draining.
Step 2: Drain the water
Move the unit close to a floor drain or put a shallow pan under the drain outlet near the bottom back. Remove the plug and let all the water run out, then refit the plug firmly.
Step 3: Set up continuous drain
If you run Dehumidify a lot, attach a hose to the drain outlet and run it to a floor drain, as the manual describes.
Step 4: Level the unit and restart
Stand the unit on a flat floor, plug it in and turn it back on.
You'll need: Shallow pan, towels.

When to call a technician
If FL shows right after draining, or with little water inside, the water level float may be stuck or faulty. Contact Haier service.
Models this applies to
- Ductless mini-split and wall-mounted split ACs
- Inverter split heat pumps
- Portable air conditioners (US, 2017 and newer)
Codes can differ slightly between models. Your owner's manual is the final word and is available from Haier support.
Common questions
›How often should a Haier portable AC need draining?
Many Haier portables evaporate most condensate in cooling mode. In very humid weather or in Dehumidify mode they fill faster and may need draining often.
›Why does FL appear when there is hardly any water?
The float that senses the water level may be stuck. Drain the unit fully, stand it level and restart. If FL comes straight back, it needs service.
