Haier air conditioner E1 code: temperature sensor fault (split and portable)

Repair cost
$120–$300

The AC has lost the signal from one of its temperature sensors. On split and mini-split units Haier lists E1 as the indoor room temperature sensor. On US portable models from 2017 on, E1 is the coil (tube) sensor.

Likely causes

Listed from most to least common.

  1. Temperature sensor failed (open or short circuit)
  2. Sensor plug loose on the control board
  3. Sensor wire damaged
  4. Brief power glitch confusing the control board
  5. Control board fault

How to fix the E1 code

Unplug the air conditioner or switch it off at the breaker before removing any panel or filter.

  1. Step 1: Turn the unit off

Switch the AC off with the remote or control panel, as Haier advises.

  2. Step 2: Reset the power

Unplug the unit, or switch off its circuit breaker, for 5 minutes. Then turn it back on. A one-off glitch may clear.

  3. Step 3: Book a repair if it returns

If E1 comes back, stop using the unit. Haier says these sensor codes need a service engineer.

Parts that may need replacing

Check your model number on the label inside the door or on the back before ordering.

When to call a technician

If E1 returns after a power reset, a technician needs to test the sensor and its plug on the control board. On a portable unit out of warranty, compare the quote with the price of a new unit.

A typical repair for this code costs $120–$300 in the US, including parts and labor. Prices vary by area and model.

Models this applies to

  • Ductless mini-split and wall-mounted split ACs
  • Inverter split heat pumps
  • Portable air conditioners (US, 2017 and newer)

Codes can differ slightly between models. Your owner's manual is the final word and is available from Haier support.

Common questions

›Why do E1 and E2 mean different sensors on different Haier ACs?

Haier uses different code tables for split units and US portable units. Both codes are sensor faults, but the split table and the portable table swap which sensor is which.

›Can I keep using the AC with E1?

Usually not. The unit stops or runs poorly because it cannot read the temperature. Turn it off and arrange a repair.
