- Urgency
- Medium
- Who can fix it
- Easy DIY
- Time
- About 30 min
- Repair cost

On split heat pumps, the indoor coil got too hot while heating, so the unit cut back to protect itself. Poor airflow through the indoor unit, such as dirty filters, is the usual cause.
Likely causes
Listed from most to least common.
- Air filters clogged with dust
- Air intake or outlet blocked
- Fan speed set very low while heating
- Indoor fan motor weak or failing
- Room already warm with a very high set point
How to fix the E9 code
Step 1: Turn off and unplug
Switch the AC off and turn off its power before opening the front panel.
Step 2: Clean the filters
Slide out the filters, vacuum or rinse them, let them dry fully and refit them.
Step 3: Clear the airflow
Make sure nothing blocks the top intake or the louvers where warm air comes out.
Step 4: Restart with a higher fan speed
Turn heating back on with Auto or a higher fan speed and a normal set point, about 70°F (21°C).
You'll need: Vacuum with brush attachment.

When to call a technician
If E9 keeps appearing with clean filters, the indoor fan motor or a sensor may be failing. Book an HVAC technician.
