Haier air conditioner E5 code: indoor coil anti-freeze protection (split)

Urgency
Medium
Who can fix it
Easy DIY
Time
About 30 min
Repair cost
$150–$600

On split and mini-split units, the indoor coil got so cold it could ice up, so the AC paused cooling to protect itself. Poor airflow, such as a dirty filter or blocked vents, is the usual cause.

Likely causes

Listed from most to least common.

  1. Air filters clogged with dust
  2. Air intake or outlet blocked by curtains or furniture
  3. Fan speed set very low in hot, humid weather
  4. Room very cool, with the set temperature at the minimum
  5. Low refrigerant charge

How to fix the E5 code

  1. Step 1: Turn off and unplug

Switch the AC off and turn off its power before opening the front panel.

  2. Step 2: Clean the filters

Lift the front panel and slide out the mesh filters. Vacuum them or rinse them in lukewarm water, let them dry fully, then refit them.

  3. Step 3: Clear the airflow

Move curtains, furniture or anything else blocking the air intake on top or the outlet louvers at the bottom.

  4. Step 4: Let any ice melt

If you see frost on the coil behind the filters, run the unit on Fan only for 30 to 60 minutes until it melts.

  5. Step 5: Restart with a higher fan speed

Turn cooling back on with a medium or high fan speed and a set point of about 75°F (24°C).

You'll need: Vacuum with brush attachment, soft brush.

Parts that may need replacing

Check your model number on the label inside the door or on the back before ordering.

When to call a technician

If E5 keeps returning with clean filters and good airflow, the system may be low on refrigerant or the indoor fan may be weak. A licensed HVAC technician needs to check it.

A typical repair for this code costs $150–$600 in the US, including parts and labor. Prices vary by area and model.

Models this applies to

  • Ductless mini-split and wall-mounted split ACs
  • Inverter split heat pumps
  • Portable air conditioners (US, 2017 and newer)

Codes can differ slightly between models. Your owner's manual is the final word and is available from Haier support.

Common questions

›How often should I clean mini-split filters?

About every 2 weeks in heavy use. Dusty filters are the most common cause of a frozen indoor coil.

›Will E5 clear on its own?

Often yes. Once the coil warms up the unit restarts. Fix the airflow problem or it will happen again.
