On LG portable air conditioners, FL means the condensate water tank or base pan is full, so the unit stops cooling. LG says this is not a fault. It happens when humid air makes water faster than the unit can get rid of it.

Likely causes

Listed from most to least common.

  1. Very humid weather making more water than the unit can evaporate
  2. Running in Dry (dehumidify) mode
  3. Unit not level, so water collects on one side
  4. Continuous drain hose blocked or kinked
  5. Water level sensor fault

How to fix the FL code

Unplug the air conditioner or switch it off at the breaker before removing any panel or filter.

  1. Step 1: Turn off and unplug

Switch the unit off and unplug it before draining.

  2. Step 2: Drain the water

Put a shallow pan or bucket under the drain port at the bottom back of the unit. Remove the drain cap and let all the water run out. Do not tilt the unit too far or it can spill.

  3. Step 3: Close the cap firmly

Push the drain cap back in fully so it does not leak, then plug the unit in and restart it.

  4. Step 4: Set up continuous drain

In humid weather, connect a drain hose to the port and run it to a floor drain or bucket below the unit, as your manual shows.

You'll need: Shallow pan, towels.

Parts that may need replacing

Check your model number on the label inside the door or on the back before ordering.

When to call a technician

If FL keeps showing right after draining, in normal temperature and humidity, the water level sensor or drain pump may be faulty. Contact LG service.

Models this applies to

  • Ductless mini-splits (wall-mounted and Art Cool)
  • Multi-zone mini-split systems
  • Window air conditioners
  • Portable air conditioners

Codes can differ slightly between models. Your owner's manual is the final word and is available from LG support.

Common questions

›How often should I drain my LG portable AC?

In normal use, rarely, because the unit evaporates most water out the exhaust hose. In very humid weather or Dry mode, it may need draining every day.

›Can I move the portable AC with water inside?

No. Drain it first. LG warns that spilled water can cause electric shock, fire or damage to your floor.
