LG air conditioner CH61 code: unit overheating (mini-split)
- Urgency
- Medium
- Who can fix it
- Easy DIY
- Time
- About 45 min
- Repair cost
- $100–$450
On LG mini-splits, CH61 is an overheat protection code. In cooling, the outdoor unit's coil is too hot, usually from poor airflow or a dirty coil. In heating, the indoor unit is too hot, usually from a clogged indoor filter.
Likely causes
Listed from most to least common.
- Plants, fences, boxes or other objects blocking airflow around the outdoor unit
- Outdoor coil clogged with dust, leaves or cottonwood
- Outdoor unit in direct sun, an enclosed space or very hot air (LG gives about 118°F as an upper limit)
- Indoor filter clogged, in heating mode
- Outdoor fan or sensor fault
How to fix the CH61 code
Unplug the air conditioner or switch it off at the breaker before removing any panel or filter.
Step 1: Clear around the outdoor unit
Move anything blocking the sides, back and top of the outdoor unit. If it sits on an enclosed porch or balcony, open windows or vents so hot air can escape.
Step 2: Clean the outdoor coil
Turn off power to the outdoor unit at the breaker or disconnect. Wearing gloves, brush dust off the fins from top to bottom with a soft brush, or rinse with a garden hose from the top down. Do not use a pressure washer or bend the fins.
Step 3: Clean the indoor filters
Lift the front panel of the indoor unit, slide out the filters and rinse them in lukewarm water. Let them dry fully before putting them back.
Step 4: Add shade if needed
If the outdoor unit sits in strong afternoon sun, a securely fixed shade above it helps. Do not cover the back or sides.
Step 5: Reset the power
Cleaning does not clear the code by itself. Switch off the breaker for 3 minutes, then turn it back on.
You'll need: Soft brush, garden hose, work gloves.

When to call a technician
If CH61 returns after the coil, filters and surroundings are clean, have a licensed HVAC technician check the outdoor fan, sensors and refrigerant charge.
A typical repair for this code costs $100–$450 in the US, including parts and labor. Prices vary by area and model.
Models this applies to
- Ductless mini-splits (wall-mounted and Art Cool)
- Multi-zone mini-split systems
- Window air conditioners
- Portable air conditioners
Codes can differ slightly between models. Your owner's manual is the final word and is available from LG support.
Common questions
›Why does CH61 only appear on very hot afternoons?
The outdoor unit cannot shed heat fast enough when it is already hot outside. Shade, a clean coil and clear space around the unit usually stop it.
›Can a dirty filter cause CH61?
Yes, in heating mode. A clogged indoor filter traps heat inside the indoor unit. Clean the filters every 2 weeks during heavy use.
