Haier washer Err5 code: water not filling
- Urgency
- Medium
- Who can fix it
- Easy DIY
- Time
- About 20 min
- Repair cost
- $150–$300
The washer did not reach the right water level in time (Haier says about 8 minutes). A closed tap, low water pressure, or a drain hose that siphons water out as it fills are the usual causes.
Likely causes
Listed from most to least common.
- Water tap turned off or only partly open
- Low water pressure in the house
- Drain hose end lower than about 32 inches (80 cm), so water siphons out
- Drain hose end sitting in water
- Inlet hose kinked or inlet filter screen clogged
- Water inlet valve failed
How to fix the Err5 code
Step 1: Check the water supply
Make sure the tap behind the washer is fully open. Run a nearby faucet to confirm the house has normal pressure.
Step 2: Check the drain hose height
Haier advises keeping the hose end between 32 and 40 inches (80 to 100 cm) above the floor. If it is lower, water drains out as fast as it fills.
Step 3: Lift the hose out of water
The hose end must not sit in water, for example at the bottom of a full sink or standpipe.
Step 4: Clean the inlet screen
Turn off the tap, unscrew the inlet hose from the back of the washer and rinse the small mesh screen inside the connection. Reattach it and turn the tap back on.
Step 5: Restart the cycle
Press Start/Pause and listen for water flowing in.
You'll need: Towels, pliers, flashlight.

When to call a technician
If the tap is open, the screen is clean and the washer still does not fill, the inlet valve likely needs replacing.

Common questions
›Why does the washer fill and drain at the same time?
The drain hose is too low or sitting in water, so water siphons out. Raise the hose end to 32 to 40 inches above the floor.
›Does Err5 mean the washer is broken?
Usually not. Most cases are a closed tap, low pressure or a badly placed drain hose.
