The washer could not drain. Haier links E1 to a blocked or kinked drain hose, a hose set at the wrong height or too long, or a failed drain pump. Some front-loaders show CLR FLTR for the same problem.
Likely causes
Listed from most to least common.
- Drain hose blocked or kinked
- Drain hose set at the wrong height for your model
- Drain hose too long (Haier advises under about 10 feet, or 3 m, including any extension)
- Pump filter clogged on front-load models
- Drain pump failed
How to fix the E1 code
Unplug the washer or switch it off at the breaker before removing any panel or filter.
Step 1: Unplug the washer
Unplug it and put towels down. Expect some water to come out when you move the hose.
Step 2: Clear the drain hose
Straighten kinks and check the hose for blockages. Make sure it is not crushed behind the washer.
Step 3: Set the hose height
Top-load models that drain by gravity need the hose to lie low, under about 4 inches (10 cm). Models with a drain pump need the hose end higher, typically 32 to 40 inches (80 to 100 cm). Check your manual for which type you have.
Step 4: Clean the filter (front-load)
On front-load models, open the bottom front cover, drain the water through the emergency hose, then unscrew and rinse the filter.
Step 5: Restart
Plug the washer in, open and close the lid or door once, and press Start/Pause.
You'll need: Towels, shallow pan, flashlight.
Parts that may need replacing

When to call a technician
If the hose is clear and set correctly and the washer still will not drain, Haier says the drain pump may be damaged and needs a technician.
A typical repair for this code costs $150–$350 in the US, including parts and labor. Prices vary by area and model.
Models this applies to
- Front-load washers (HW series)
- Top-load washers (HWT and HWM series)
- Portable and compact washers
Codes can differ slightly between models. Your owner's manual is the final word and is available from Haier support.
Common questions
›What does CLR FLTR mean on a Haier washer?
Clear filter. The washer could not drain, usually because the pump filter at the bottom front is clogged.
›Can a drain hose extension cause E1?
Yes. Haier advises keeping the total hose length under about 10 feet (3 m). Longer hoses slow draining.
