- Technician job
- Time
- About 20 min
- Repair cost
- $300–$900
On inverter split units, the outdoor unit's power module (IPM) that drives the compressor has shut down to protect itself. Power problems, an overheated or blocked outdoor unit, or a failed module are the usual causes.
Likely causes
Listed from most to least common.
- Supply voltage too high or too low
- Outdoor unit blocked by leaves, snow or plants, so it overheats
- Outdoor fan not running
- IPM module or outdoor control board failed
- Compressor fault
How to fix the F1 code
Unplug the air conditioner or switch it off at the breaker before removing any panel or filter.
Step 1: Turn the system off
Switch the AC off with the remote, then turn off its breaker.
Step 2: Clear around the outdoor unit
Remove leaves, snow, plants and stored items. Keep at least 2 feet (60 cm) of clear space around it.
Step 3: Reset the power
Leave the power off for 10 minutes, then turn it back on and restart the AC.
You'll need: Gloves.
When to call a technician
If F1 returns, a licensed HVAC technician needs to test the IPM, outdoor board and compressor. Do not open the outdoor unit's electrical panel.
A typical repair for this code costs $300–$900 in the US, including parts and labor. Prices vary by area and model.
Models this applies to
- Ductless mini-split and wall-mounted split ACs
- Inverter split heat pumps
- Portable air conditioners (US, 2017 and newer)
Codes can differ slightly between models. Your owner's manual is the final word and is available from Haier support.
Common questions
›What is an IPM?
The intelligent power module. It is the part of the outdoor inverter board that powers the compressor.
›Can a storm cause F1?
Yes. A power surge or brownout can trip the module's protection. A power reset may clear it, but repeated F1 codes point to a fault.
