GE refrigerator PF code: power failure
- Urgency
- Low
- Who can fix it
- Easy DIY
- Time
- About 5 min
- Repair cost
- No repair needed
Power to the refrigerator was cut for more than two seconds. GE says this is not a fault. Check your food, then clear the code.
Likely causes
Listed from most to least common.
- Power outage or brownout
- Breaker tripped or GFCI outlet reset
- Plug pulled or knocked loose
- Refrigerator just installed or plugged in
How to fix the PF code
Unplug the refrigerator or switch it off at the breaker before removing any panel or filter.
Step 1: Check your food
Check food in both the fridge and freezer. If the power was off for hours, throw out perishables that were above 40°F for more than 2 hours.
Step 2: Clear the code
Press System Check or Reset if your model has it. Otherwise, the code clears on its own or after you unplug the fridge for 1 minute.
Step 3: Check the outlet
If PF keeps showing without an outage, plug the fridge straight into its own wall outlet, not an extension cord, and check for a tripping breaker.
When to call a technician
No repair is needed for a single PF code. If it shows often with no outage, have an electrician check the outlet and circuit.
Models this applies to
- Side-by-side refrigerators with dispenser displays
- French door refrigerators (GE, GE Profile and Café)
- Bottom freezer refrigerators with RPWFE water filter
- Top freezer refrigerators with electronic controls
Codes can differ slightly between models. Your owner's manual is the final word and is available from GE support.
Common questions
›Why did PF show when I first plugged in my GE fridge?
That is normal. The control sees the power was off and flashes PF until you clear it.
›Does PF mean my fridge is broken?
No. GE states there is no fault with the refrigerator when PF flashes. It only tells you power was lost.
