GE refrigerator dE code: defrost system fault

Urgency
High
Who can fix it
Moderate DIY
Time
About 15 min
Repair cost
$200–$450

The automatic defrost has not run properly in the last 24 hours, so frost may be building on the cooling coils. A failed defrost heater or sensor is the usual cause.

Likely causes

Listed from most to least common.

  1. Defrost heater failed
  2. Defrost sensor or thermostat failed
  3. Heavy frost buildup on the evaporator coils
  4. Main control board fault
  5. Power glitch confused the control

How to fix the dE code

Unplug the refrigerator or switch it off at the breaker before removing any panel or filter.

  1. Step 1: Reset the control

Unplug the refrigerator or switch off its breaker for 1 to 2 minutes, then restore power. See if the code clears.

  2. Step 2: Keep the doors closed

If the code comes back, open the doors as little as possible so the fridge holds its cold until service.

  3. Step 3: Watch the temperatures

Put a thermometer in each section. The fridge should stay near 37°F and the freezer near 0°F. Move food to a cooler if they rise.

You'll need: Fridge thermometer, cooler.

Parts that may need replacing

Check your model number on the label inside the door or on the back before ordering.

When to call a technician

GE says to call for service when dE keeps flashing. The defrost heater, sensor or control board sits behind interior panels and needs a technician.

A typical repair for this code costs $200–$450 in the US, including parts and labor. Prices vary by area and model.

Models this applies to

  • Side-by-side refrigerators with dispenser displays
  • French door refrigerators (GE, GE Profile and Café)
  • Bottom freezer refrigerators with RPWFE water filter
  • Top freezer refrigerators with electronic controls

Codes can differ slightly between models. Your owner's manual is the final word and is available from GE support.

Common questions

›Is dE the same as DE demo mode?

No. On GE's list, lowercase dE is a defrost fault and uppercase DE is demo mode. If the lights work but nothing cools, try the demo mode steps first.

›Can I keep using the fridge with a dE code?

For a short time. Frost slowly blocks the airflow, so cooling gets worse until the defrost system is fixed.
