A part in the oven door lock circuit has failed. It often shows up during or after a self-clean cycle, and the oven door may stay locked.

Likely causes

Listed from most to least common.

  1. Failed door lock motor or lock switch
  2. Food or debris blocking the latch
  3. Loose wiring at the door lock
  4. Heat damage from a self-clean cycle
  5. Faulty electronic oven control

How to fix the F9 code

Unplug the oven or switch it off at the breaker before removing any panel or filter.

  1. Step 1: Let the oven cool

If the code appeared during self-clean, press Clear/Off and let the oven cool for at least one hour. Never force a locked door open.

  2. Step 2: Reset power at the breaker

With the oven cool, turn the breaker off for one to two minutes, then back on. The lock often tries to release when power returns.

  3. Step 3: Check the latch area

Once the door opens, look for food or debris near the latch and wipe it clean.

You'll need: Flashlight.

Parts that may need replacing

Check your model number on the label inside the door or on the back before ordering.

When to call a technician

Call a technician if the door stays locked when the oven is cool or F9 keeps returning. Do not try to pry the door or bypass the lock.

A typical repair for this code costs $150–$350 in the US, including parts and labor. Prices vary by area and model.

Codes can differ slightly between models. Your owner's manual is the final word and is available from GE support.
