The oven got hotter than a preset limit, so the control shut off the heat. A failed sensor or control board is the usual cause.

Likely causes

Listed from most to least common.

  1. Faulty oven temperature sensor reading too low
  2. Heating relay on the control board stuck on
  3. Failed electronic oven control
  4. Very high heat during a self-clean cycle

How to fix the F2 code

Unplug the oven or switch it off at the breaker before removing any panel or filter.

  1. Step 1: Turn the oven off

Press Clear/Off. If the oven still seems to be heating, turn off the circuit breaker for the oven right away.

  2. Step 2: Let the oven cool

Leave the oven to cool for at least one hour. Do not force the door open if it is locked.

  3. Step 3: Reset power at the breaker

With the oven cool, turn the breaker off for one to two minutes, then back on. Watch the display for a few minutes.

  4. Step 4: Test with care

Bake at 350°F and stay nearby. If the code returns or the oven overheats, turn the breaker off and leave it off.

Parts that may need replacing

Check your model number on the label inside the door or on the back before ordering.

When to call a technician

Call a technician if F2 returns after a reset. An oven that overheats needs its sensor and control tested. Keep the breaker off until it is fixed. On a gas range, if you smell gas, leave the home and call your gas company.

A typical repair for this code costs $150–$450 in the US, including parts and labor. Prices vary by area and model.

Models this applies to

  • GE electric and gas ranges (JB, JGB, JS and JGS series)
  • GE Profile and Café ranges (PB, PGB, PS, CES and CGS series)
  • Single and double wall ovens (JTS, JTD, PTS and CTS series)

Codes can differ slightly between models. Your owner's manual is the final word and is available from GE support.

Common questions

›Is it safe to use my GE oven with an F2 code?

No. F2 means the oven went past its safe temperature limit. GE advises keeping the oven off at the breaker until it is serviced.

›Is F20 the same as F2?

Yes. GE lists F2 and F20 together as the over temperature code on ranges and wall ovens.
