GE oven F3 code: oven temperature sensor fault

Urgency

Repair cost
$120–$300

The control is getting a bad reading from the oven temperature sensor, so it will not heat. GE says the oven sensor usually needs to be replaced.

Likely causes

Listed from most to least common.

  1. Failed oven temperature sensor
  2. Sensor plug loose behind the oven back wall
  3. Sensor wire damaged by heat or a self-clean cycle
  4. Faulty electronic oven control

How to fix the F3 code

Unplug the oven or switch it off at the breaker before removing any panel or filter.

  1. Step 1: Reset power at the breaker

Turn off the circuit breaker for the oven for one to two minutes, then turn it back on. Watch the display to see if F3 returns.

  2. Step 2: Test the oven

Start a bake at 350°F. If it heats normally and the code stays away, it was a one-off glitch.

  3. Step 3: Look at the sensor

With the breaker off and the oven cold, find the thin probe at the top rear of the oven. A bent, loose or scorched sensor points to the fault.

  4. Step 4: Replace the sensor

The sensor is held by two screws inside the oven and plugs in just behind the back wall. Fit a new one only with the breaker off and the oven fully cool.

You'll need: Nut driver set, flashlight, multimeter.

Parts that may need replacing

Check your model number on the label inside the door or on the back before ordering.

When to call a technician

Call a technician if a new sensor does not clear F3, or if the sensor wiring is burnt. The wiring or control board may need testing.

A typical repair for this code costs $120–$300 in the US, including parts and labor. Prices vary by area and model.

Models this applies to

  • GE electric and gas ranges (JB, JGB, JS and JGS series)
  • GE Profile and Café ranges (PB, PGB, PS, CES and CGS series)
  • Single and double wall ovens (JTS, JTD, PTS and CTS series)

Codes can differ slightly between models. Your owner's manual is the final word and is available from GE support.

Common questions

›Can I still use my GE range with F3?

The oven will not bake because it cannot tell how hot it is. GE says you can turn the breaker on to use the cooktop, then turn it off again after.

›What is the difference between F3 and F4 on a GE oven?

GE says both mean the oven sensor usually needs replacing. Repair techs usually read F3 as an open sensor and F4 as a shorted one.
