The washer is not getting enough water within the time it expects. It almost always means the water supply is closed, a hose is kinked, or the small filter screens in the inlet are clogged.
Likely causes
Listed from most to least common.
- Water taps behind the washer are closed or only partly open
- Inlet hose is kinked, crushed behind the machine, or frozen
- Mesh filter screens where the hoses connect are clogged with sediment
- Low water pressure in the house
- Faulty water inlet valve
How to fix the 4C code
Unplug the washer or switch it off at the breaker before removing any panel or filter.
Step 1: Open both water taps fully
Turn the hot and cold taps behind the washer all the way counterclockwise. A tap that is only half open can trigger 4C.
Step 2: Check the hoses
Pull the washer forward a little and make sure neither hose is bent, pinched against the wall, or frozen in cold weather.
Step 3: Clean the inlet filter screens
Turn the taps off, unplug the washer and unscrew both hoses from the back of the machine. Pull out the small mesh filter inside each port with needle-nose pliers, rinse it under a tap, and refit it.
Step 4: Test the water pressure
Run a nearby tap. If the flow is weak, the problem is the house supply, not the washer.
Step 5: Reset the washer
Unplug the washer for one minute, plug it back in and start a Rinse + Spin cycle. If water flows and the code does not return, the problem is fixed.
Step 6: Check the inlet valve
If water pressure is good and the screens are clean but the drum still does not fill, the water inlet valve has likely failed and needs replacing.
You'll need: Needle-nose pliers, towel, small bucket.
Parts that may need replacing
Check your model number on the label inside the door or on the back before ordering.

When to call a technician
Call a technician if water pressure is normal, the screens are clean and the washer still will not fill. That points to a failed inlet valve or a control board fault.
A typical repair for this code costs $120–$280 in the US, including parts and labor. Prices vary by area and model.
Models this applies to
- Front-load washers (WF series)
- Top-load washers (WA series)
- FlexWash and washer-dryer combos
Codes can differ slightly between models. Your owner's manual is the final word and is available from Samsung support.
Common questions
›Is 4C the same as 4E on a Samsung washer?
Yes. Newer Samsung washers show 4C and older ones show 4E. Both mean a water supply problem.
›Can I still use the washer with a 4C code?
Not until water flows in normally. The washer will stop the cycle each time it cannot fill.
