GE dishwasher H2O code: low water, not filling enough

Urgency
Medium

About 15 min
Repair cost
$150–$300

The dishwasher did not get enough water during the fill. Usually the water valve under the sink is not fully open or the inlet hose is kinked.

Likely causes

Listed from most to least common.

  1. Water supply valve under the sink closed or only partly open
  2. Water recently shut off for plumbing work
  3. Inlet hose kinked or pinched behind the dishwasher
  4. Low water pressure in the home
  5. Dishwasher not level, so the water level reads low

How to fix the H2O code

  1. Step 1: Open the water valve fully

Find the hot water valve under the sink nearest the dishwasher. Turn it counterclockwise until it stops.

  2. Step 2: Check the inlet hose

Look under the sink for kinks or tight bends in the supply line to the dishwasher. Straighten it if you can reach it.

  3. Step 3: Level the dishwasher

Place a level inside on the door opening. If it tilts front to back, adjust the leveling legs so water does not pool to one end.

  4. Step 4: Clear the code

Select a different cycle, then switch back to the one you want and press Start.

You'll need: Flashlight, level.

Parts that may need replacing

Check your model number on the label inside the door or on the back before ordering.

When to call a technician

If the valve is fully open, the hose is straight, the dishwasher is level and water pressure is good, the inlet valve may have failed. Book a repair.

A typical repair for this code costs $150–$300 in the US, including parts and labor. Prices vary by area and model.

Models this applies to

  • GE built-in dishwashers (GDT, GDF, GDP series)
  • GE Profile dishwashers (PDT series)
  • Café dishwashers (CDT series)

Codes can differ slightly between models. Your owner's manual is the final word and is available from GE support.

Common questions

›Is H20 the same as H2O on a GE dishwasher?

Yes. The display shows H2O, which many people read as H20. Both mean low water.

›Why did H2O appear right after installation?

It is common on first use or after the water was shut off. Air in the line or a valve left partly closed slows the fill. Open the valve fully and run another cycle.
