- About 20 min
- Repair cost
- $120–$300
The drain pump ran for more than 2 minutes during a drain. Usually a clogged air gap, a kinked drain hose or a full garbage disposal is slowing it.
Likely causes
Listed from most to least common.
- Clogged air gap on the sink or countertop
- Drain hose kinked or sagging under the sink
- Garbage disposal full or knockout plug not removed
- Filter or sump clogged with food
How to fix the C1 code
Step 1: Run the garbage disposal
If the dishwasher drains into a disposal, run it with cold water for 30 seconds to clear it.
Step 2: Clean the air gap
If you have a small chrome cap next to the faucet, pull off the cap and cover and clear any debris inside.
Step 3: Check the drain hose
Look under the sink for kinks or low sags in the drain hose. It should loop up high before it connects.
Step 4: Clean the filter
Remove the bottom rack, twist out the filter in the floor of the tub and rinse it under warm water.
You'll need: Flashlight, soft brush, towels.

Common questions
›Can I still use my dishwasher with a C1 code?
It may finish the cycle, but water can be left in the tub. Clear the drain path before the next load.
›What is the knockout plug?
A new garbage disposal has a plastic plug inside the dishwasher inlet. If it was not punched out at install, the dishwasher cannot drain.
