What the E3 code means
E3 on a Danby portable air conditioner means the condenser (hot coil) temperature sensor has an error. Danby lists it in manuals for models such as the DPA120BCCWDB and DPA140BDCBDB. Unplug the unit to reset it, and call for service if E3 returns.
The condenser is the hot coil that dumps heat out through the exhaust hose. A sensor on it lets the control board watch for overheating. If its reading drops out or makes no sense, the board stops the unit and shows E3.
A single E3 after a power cut can be a glitch. If it returns, the sensor, its wire or the plug on the board is at fault.
Common causes
Listed from most to least common.
- Condenser temperature sensor failed
- Sensor plug loose on the control board
- Sensor wire damaged
- Brief power glitch
- Control board fault
How to fix the E3 code
Unplug the air conditioner or switch it off at the breaker before removing any panel or filter.
Step 1: Unplug the unit
Turn the unit off and unplug it for 5 to 10 minutes.
Step 2: Check the exhaust hose
Make sure the exhaust hose is attached at both ends, is not kinked and is as short and straight as possible. A blocked exhaust makes the hot side run hotter.
Step 3: Restart in Cool mode
Plug the unit into a wall outlet and turn it on. Wait a few minutes for the compressor to start.
Step 4: Call for service if it repeats
If E3 comes back, stop using the unit and contact Danby Consumer Care.
How to reset the Danby air conditioner
- Turn the air conditioner off with the remote or the control panel.
- Unplug the unit and leave it for 5 to 10 minutes, as Danby's manuals advise.
- Plug it back in and turn it on. The compressor normally waits a few minutes before starting, so give it time before judging.
- If the same code comes back, the fault is still there. Work through the fix steps above, or call Danby Consumer Care at 1-800-263-2629.
When to call a technician
If E3 returns after a reset, the condenser sensor or its wiring needs testing inside the cabinet. Book a technician, or contact Danby if the unit is under warranty.
A typical repair for this code costs $120–$300 in the US, including parts and labor. Prices vary by area and model.
Models this applies to
- Portable air conditioners (DPA series)
- Window air conditioners (DAC series)
Codes can differ slightly between models. Your owner's manual is the final word and is available from Danby support.
Frequently asked questions
›Is E3 the same on every Danby portable?
No. E3 appears in some Danby manuals, such as the DPA120BCCWDB and DPA140BDCBDB, but not in others. Check the error code list in your own manual.
›Will a kinked exhaust hose cause E3?
It should not cause a sensor error on its own, but it makes the condenser run hot. Fix the hose anyway, so you do not confuse two problems.
›Can I keep using the unit with E3?
No. Leave it off until the sensor has been checked.
