What the AS code means
AS on a Danby window air conditioner means the room (ambient) temperature sensor has an error. Danby's DAC manuals say to unplug the unit, let it stand for 5 to 10 minutes, and plug it back in. If AS persists, call for service.
The room sensor sits near the air intake, behind the front grille, and tells the control how warm the room is. If its reading drops out or makes no sense, the control stops and shows AS.
A one-off AS after a power cut can clear with a reset. If it returns, the sensor, its wire or the board is at fault.
Common causes
Listed from most to least common.
- Room temperature sensor failed
- Sensor plug loose on the control board
- Sensor wire damaged
- Brief power glitch
- Control board fault
How to fix the AS code
Unplug the air conditioner or switch it off at the breaker before removing any panel or filter.
Step 1: Unplug the unit
Turn the unit off, unplug it and let it stand for 5 to 10 minutes.
Step 2: Clean the filter
While it is unplugged, slide out the filter, wash it in warm water and let it dry fully. Do not run the unit without it.
Step 3: Restore power
Plug the unit back in. If the cord plug has a RESET button, press it. Turn the unit on in Cool mode.
Step 4: Call for service if it persists
If AS comes back, call Danby Consumer Care with the model and serial number.
Repair or replace a window unit with AS?
Check the warranty date first. Danby can arrange service on units still under warranty.
Out of warranty, a sensor repair is mostly labor. On a 5,000 or 6,000 BTU unit, that can be close to the price of a new one, so get a quote before booking.
How to reset the Danby air conditioner
- Turn the air conditioner off with the remote or the control panel.
- Unplug the unit and leave it for 5 to 10 minutes, as Danby's manuals advise.
- Plug it back in and turn it on. The compressor normally waits a few minutes before starting, so give it time before judging.
- If the same code comes back, the fault is still there. Work through the fix steps above, or call Danby Consumer Care at 1-800-263-2629.
When to call a technician
If AS returns after a reset, the room sensor or its plug needs testing. The unit has to come out of the window and be opened, so book a technician. On a small window unit, compare the quote with the price of a new one.
A typical repair for this code costs $120–$300 in the US, including parts and labor. Prices vary by area and model.
Models this applies to
- Portable air conditioners (DPA series)
- Window air conditioners (DAC series)
Codes can differ slightly between models. Your owner's manual is the final word and is available from Danby support.
