What the E2 code means

E2 on a Danby portable air conditioner means the evaporator (indoor coil) temperature sensor has an error. Danby's manuals say to unplug the unit, plug it back in, and call for service if E2 repeats. The unit stops because it cannot protect the coil from freezing.

The evaporator sensor is clipped to the cold indoor coil. The control board uses it to stop the coil icing up. If the reading drops out or makes no sense, the board stops the unit and shows E2.

A one-off E2 after a power cut can clear with a reset. If it returns, the sensor, its clip or the plug on the board is usually at fault.

Common causes

Listed from most to least common.

  1. Evaporator temperature sensor failed
  2. Sensor clip slipped off the coil
  3. Sensor plug loose on the control board
  4. Brief power glitch
  5. Control board fault

How to fix the E2 code

Unplug the air conditioner or switch it off at the breaker before removing any panel or filter.

  1. Step 1: Unplug the unit

Turn the unit off and unplug it for 5 to 10 minutes.

  2. Step 2: Clean the filters

While it is unplugged, clean the air filters. Danby recommends every two weeks. It will not fix a failed sensor, but it rules out an iced coil.

  3. Step 3: Restart in Cool mode

Plug the unit straight into a wall outlet and turn it on. Wait a few minutes for the compressor.

  4. Step 4: Call for service if it repeats

If E2 comes back, stop using the unit and contact Danby Consumer Care.

You'll need: Vacuum with brush attachment.

How to reset the Danby air conditioner

  1. Turn the air conditioner off with the remote or the control panel.
  2. Unplug the unit and leave it for 5 to 10 minutes, as Danby's manuals advise.
  3. Plug it back in and turn it on. The compressor normally waits a few minutes before starting, so give it time before judging.
  4. If the same code comes back, the fault is still there. Work through the fix steps above, or call Danby Consumer Care at 1-800-263-2629.

When to call a technician

If E2 returns after a reset, a technician needs to test the coil sensor and its plug inside the cabinet. The part is cheap; the labor is most of the bill.

A typical repair for this code costs $120–$300 in the US, including parts and labor. Prices vary by area and model.

Models this applies to

  • Portable air conditioners (DPA series)
  • Window air conditioners (DAC series)

Codes can differ slightly between models. Your owner's manual is the final word and is available from Danby support.

Frequently asked questions

›Is E2 a sign my Danby is low on refrigerant?

No. E2 is a sensor error. The sensor reads the coil temperature, but the refrigerant is not the cause.

›Can I keep using the unit with E2?

No. Without the coil reading the unit cannot stop the coil freezing, so it shuts down.

›How much does it cost to fix E2?

Usually about $120 to $300 for a technician to replace the sensor. A control board costs more.
