What the E3 code means

E3 on a MRCOOL air handler means the indoor fan is running outside its normal speed range. Gen 4 and Gen 5 units show it as EH 03. MRCOOL lists a blocked fan, loose wiring, a failed fan motor or, rarely, the control board.

The indoor fan is a DC motor that reports its speed to the board. If the speed stays outside the expected range, the board shuts the unit off.

Regular cleaning of the filters and blower wheel helps prevent E3.

On Gen 1 to 3 units the indoor display shows E3. Gen 4 and Gen 5 units show EH 03. The outdoor fan has its own code, F5 or EC 07.

Common causes

Listed from most to least common.

  1. Dust, debris or an object blocking the indoor blower wheel
  2. Loose wire between the fan motor and the control board
  3. Fan motor failed
  4. Control board fault (rare)

How to fix the E3 code

Unplug the air conditioner or switch it off at the breaker before removing any panel or filter.

  1. Step 1: Turn off the power

Switch off the breaker before opening anything.

  2. Step 2: Check the blower wheel

Open the front panel and look through the air outlet at the long blower wheel. Remove anything caught in it.

  3. Step 3: Spin it by hand

Turn the blower wheel gently with a finger or a pencil. It should turn freely.

  4. Step 4: Reset and test

Restore power and run the unit on fan mode. If E3 returns, book a repair.

You'll need: Flashlight, soft brush.

How to reset the MRCOOL air conditioner

  1. Turn the mini-split off with the remote.
  2. Switch off the breaker for the system and the outdoor disconnect switch. MRCOOL suggests leaving the power off for 15 minutes so the boards fully reset.
  3. Restore power and turn the unit back on. The compressor normally waits about 3 minutes before starting, so give it time before judging.
  4. If the same code comes back straight away, the fault is still there. Work through the fix steps above, or call a technician.

When to call a technician

If the blower is clear and E3 returns, a technician should check the fan motor wiring and test the motor and board.

A typical repair for this code costs $200–$650 in the US, including parts and labor. Prices vary by area and model.

Models this applies to

  • DIY Series ductless mini-splits (Gen 1 to 5), single-zone and multi-zone
  • Advantage Series mini-splits
  • Olympus Series mini-splits
  • EZ-PRO mini-splits

Codes can differ slightly between models. Your owner's manual is the final word and is available from MRCOOL support.

Frequently asked questions

›Can a dirty blower wheel cause E3?

Yes. Heavy dust or mold build-up can slow it. A technician can clean it properly.

›Is E3 expensive to fix?

A fan motor costs more than a sensor but less than a board. Expect a few hundred dollars with labor.

›Is E3 the same on a multi-zone outdoor unit?

No. On Gen 1 to 3 multi-zone outdoor units, E3 means a communication fault between the IPM board and the outdoor main board.

›What should I tell MRCOOL support about E3?

Give them the model and serial number, the exact code, whether the blower wheel turns freely by hand, and whether the code appears at start-up or after running a while. Photos of the board wiring help if a technician has opened the unit.
