Whirlpool oven F3E0 code: oven temperature sensor fault

Urgency
High
Who can fix it
Moderate DIY
Time
About 30 min
Repair cost
$120–$300

The control is getting a reading from the oven temperature sensor that makes no sense, so it stops heating. Whirlpool points to the sensor, its wiring or the control. On double wall ovens, F3E0 refers to the upper oven sensor.

Likely causes

Listed from most to least common.

  1. Failed oven temperature sensor
  2. Sensor wire or plug loose or burnt at the back of the oven
  3. Sensor lead damaged by heat or by a self-clean cycle
  4. Faulty oven control board

How to fix the F3E0 code

Unplug the oven or switch it off at the breaker before removing any panel or filter.

  1. Step 1: Reset power at the breaker

Turn off the circuit breaker for the oven for one minute, then turn it back on. Watch the display for one minute to see if the code returns.

  2. Step 2: Test the oven

Start a bake at 350°F. If it heats normally and the code stays away, it was a one-off glitch.

  3. Step 3: Look at the sensor

With the oven cold and the breaker off, look at the thin probe at the top rear of the oven cavity. A bent, loose or scorched sensor points to the fault.

  4. Step 4: Replace the sensor

The sensor is held by two screws inside the oven, and its plug sits just behind the back wall. Fit a new one only with the breaker off and the oven fully cool.

You'll need: Nut driver set, flashlight, multimeter.

Parts that may need replacing

Check your model number on the label inside the door or on the back before ordering.

When to call a technician

Call a technician if a new sensor does not clear the code, or if the sensor wiring is burnt. The control board or harness may need testing.

A typical repair for this code costs $120–$300 in the US, including parts and labor. Prices vary by area and model.

Models this applies to

  • Electric and gas freestanding ranges (WFE, WFG and WEE series)
  • Slide-in ranges (WEE, WEG and WEC series)
  • Single, double and combination wall ovens (WOS, WOD and WOC series)

Codes can differ slightly between models. Your owner's manual is the final word and is available from Whirlpool support.

Common questions

›Can I still use my Whirlpool oven with F3E0?

Usually not. The control stops heating because it cannot tell how hot the oven is. The cooktop may still work on some ranges.

›What is the difference between F3E0 and F3E1?

Both point to the oven temperature sensor circuit. On Whirlpool double wall ovens, F3E0 is the upper oven sensor and F3E1 is the lower oven sensor.
