The fan in the fresh food section is not turning as expected. Samsung says this often follows running the fridge with a door open too long, which lets ice build up and block the fan.
Likely causes
Listed from most to least common.
- Door left open or not fully closed, letting ice build up around the fan
- Door gasket not sealing all the way around
- Fridge packed so full that a door cannot close
- Fridge fan motor failed
How to fix the 22E code
Unplug the refrigerator or switch it off at the breaker before removing any panel or filter.
Step 1: Move your food
Move food to a cooler or another fridge. The next step takes a few hours.
Step 2: Defrost the fridge
Unplug the fridge and leave the doors open for a few hours, as Samsung advises. Put towels on the floor to catch melt water.
Step 3: Restart
Plug the fridge back in, close the doors and use it as normal. Let it cool for several hours before putting food back.
Step 4: Check the doors seal
Make sure nothing stops the doors closing and the gaskets seal all the way around. Wipe the gaskets with warm, soapy water if they are sticky or dirty.
You'll need: Towels, cooler.
Parts that may need replacing
Check your model number on the label inside the door or on the back before ordering.

When to call a technician
If 22E returns after a full defrost and the doors seal properly, Samsung advises requesting service. The fan motor or a recurring ice problem needs a technician.
A typical repair for this code costs $200–$400 in the US, including parts and labor. Prices vary by area and model.
Models this applies to
- French door refrigerators (RF series)
- Family Hub refrigerators
- Side-by-side refrigerators (RS series)
- Top and bottom freezer refrigerators (RT and RB series)
Codes can differ slightly between models. Your owner's manual is the final word and is available from Samsung support.
Common questions
›Is 22E the same as 22C?
Yes. Samsung lists both as the fridge fan error.
›Why does 22E keep coming back after I defrost?
Something keeps letting ice form, such as a door that does not seal, or the fan motor itself has failed. Book a repair.
