Likely causes
Listed from most to least common.

- Rubber washer missing or not seated in a fitting
- Too many suds from hand dish soap or too much detergent
- Float switch wire not connected
- Leak from a hose, the door seal or the tub
How to fix the F8E4 code
Unplug the dishwasher or switch it off at the breaker before removing any panel or filter.
Step 1: Silence the alarm and shut off the water
Press Cancel once to silence the alarm. Close the water supply valve under the sink. Leave the door closed so the dishwasher can pump out.
Step 2: Check for suds
If the tub is full of foam, let the suds settle before running again. Use only automatic dishwasher detergent, in the right amount.
Step 3: Empty the drip tray
With power off, remove the toe kick and carefully pull out the drip tray. Empty it and dry it. Take care not to damage the float switch wire.
Step 4: Check the water connections
Make sure the rubber washer is seated in each fitting and the fittings are snug. Look for drips with a flashlight.
Step 5: Clear the code
Refit the tray and toe kick, restore water and power, and press Cancel to clear the code. Watch for leaks on the next cycle.
You'll need: Screwdriver, flashlight, towels.

Common questions
›Why did F8E4 appear after I used dish soap?
Hand dish soap makes a lot of foam. The suds can spill into the drip tray and trip the float switch. Let the suds settle and use dishwasher detergent only.
›Should I turn off the power when F8E4 shows?
KitchenAid says to turn off the water and keep the power on with the door closed, so the dishwasher can pump water out. Turn off power before you remove any panels.
