A temperature sensor (thermistor) circuit is open, so the control cannot read that section. If OP shows in the freezer display, it is the freezer sensor. In the fresh food display, it is the fresh food sensor. A broken wire or failed sensor is the usual cause.
Likely causes
Listed from most to least common.
- Failed thermistor
- Broken or unplugged sensor wire
- Loose connector at the main control board
- Moisture or ice damage at the sensor connector
How to fix the OP code
Unplug the refrigerator or switch it off at the breaker before removing any panel or filter.
Step 1: Note which display shows OP
Write down whether OP is in the freezer (FZ) or fresh food (FF) display. This tells the technician which sensor to test.
Step 2: Reset the refrigerator
Unplug it or switch off the breaker for 5 minutes, then restore power.
Step 3: Check temperatures
Put an appliance thermometer in each section. Aim for 37°F in the refrigerator and 0°F in the freezer.
You'll need: Appliance thermometer.
Parts that may need replacing
Check your model number on the label inside the door or on the back before ordering.

When to call a technician
If OP stays after a reset, a technician should measure the sensor and wiring. The sensor is often behind panels and needs testing with a meter.
A typical repair for this code costs $150–$300 in the US, including parts and labor. Prices vary by area and model.
Models this applies to
- Gallery and Professional French door refrigerators
- Side-by-side refrigerators
- Bottom-freezer refrigerators
Codes can differ slightly between models. Your owner's manual is the final word and is available from Frigidaire support.
Common questions
›Is OP the same as an open door?
No. OP means an open circuit in a temperature sensor. A door left open triggers a door ajar alarm instead.
›Will the refrigerator still cool with OP?
It may keep running on a backup schedule, but temperatures can drift. Check them with a thermometer until it is fixed.
