The refrigerator or freezer has warmed past its safe limit. Frigidaire says the alarm trips at 55°F in the refrigerator or 26°F in the freezer. The usual cause is a door left open, then a power outage or a poor door seal.

Likely causes

Listed from most to least common.

  1. Door left open or not fully closed
  2. Recent power outage
  3. Temperature settings changed
  4. Worn or dirty door gasket
  5. Large load of warm food added at once
  6. Cooling problem such as a fan or defrost fault

How to fix the H code

Unplug the refrigerator or switch it off at the breaker before removing any panel or filter.

  1. Step 1: Close the doors and clear the alert

Make sure every door and drawer is shut. Press Clear Alerts or Alarm Reset to silence the alarm. The light may stay on until the temperature recovers.

  2. Step 2: Check the settings

Frigidaire recommends 37°F for the refrigerator and 0°F for the freezer.

  3. Step 3: Check the door seals

Wipe the gaskets with warm soapy water and make sure nothing on the shelves is holding a door open.

  4. Step 4: Give it time

Keep the doors closed for several hours. If the alarm will not clear, unplug the unit for 30 seconds and plug it back in.

You'll need: Appliance thermometer, soft cloth.

Parts that may need replacing

Check your model number on the label inside the door or on the back before ordering.

When to call a technician

If the doors seal well and the alarm keeps coming back, or the unit will not cool below 40°F, book service. The cooling system needs a technician.

Models this applies to

  • Gallery and Professional French door refrigerators
  • Side-by-side refrigerators
  • Bottom-freezer refrigerators

Codes can differ slightly between models. Your owner's manual is the final word and is available from Frigidaire support.

Common questions

›Is my food safe after an H alarm?

Press Clear Alerts to see the highest temperature reached. Food that sat above 40°F for more than 2 hours should usually be thrown out.

›Why does H show after a power outage?

The refrigerator warmed up while the power was off. The alarm stays on until both sections cool back to a safe temperature.
