What the ES code means
ES on a Danby window air conditioner means the evaporator (indoor coil) temperature sensor has an error. Danby's DAC060EB7WDB manual lists it. Unplug the unit for 5 to 10 minutes and plug it back in, and call for service if ES persists.
The evaporator sensor is clipped to the cold coil behind the filter. The control uses it to stop the coil icing. If the reading drops out or makes no sense, the unit stops and shows ES.
A one-off ES after a power cut can clear with a reset. If it returns, the sensor, its clip or the board is at fault. The repair does not involve the refrigerant.
Common causes
Listed from most to least common.
- Evaporator temperature sensor failed
- Sensor clip slipped off the coil
- Sensor plug loose on the control board
- Brief power glitch
- Control board fault
How to fix the ES code
Unplug the air conditioner or switch it off at the breaker before removing any panel or filter.
Step 1: Unplug the unit
Turn the unit off, unplug it and let it stand for 5 to 10 minutes.
Step 2: Clean the filter
Slide out the filter and wash it. A clean filter rules out an iced coil.
Step 3: Restore power
Plug the unit back in, press RESET on the plug if it has one, and run Cool mode.
Step 4: Call for service if it persists
If ES returns, stop using the unit and call Danby Consumer Care.
How to reset the Danby air conditioner
- Turn the air conditioner off with the remote or the control panel.
- Unplug the unit and leave it for 5 to 10 minutes, as Danby's manuals advise.
- Plug it back in and turn it on. The compressor normally waits a few minutes before starting, so give it time before judging.
- If the same code comes back, the fault is still there. Work through the fix steps above, or call Danby Consumer Care at 1-800-263-2629.
When to call a technician
If ES returns after a reset, the coil sensor needs testing inside the unit. Book a technician, or contact Danby if the unit is under warranty.
A typical repair for this code costs $120–$300 in the US, including parts and labor. Prices vary by area and model.
Models this applies to
- Portable air conditioners (DPA series)
- Window air conditioners (DAC series)
Codes can differ slightly between models. Your owner's manual is the final word and is available from Danby support.
Frequently asked questions
›Is ES a refrigerant problem?
No. It is a sensor error. The sensor reads the coil temperature; the refrigerant is not the cause.
›Why does my Danby manual show a dot instead of ES?
Some Danby window manuals, such as the DAC080EB7WDB and DAC250EB2WDB, print the evaporator sensor code as a symbol. The meaning is the same: evaporator temperature sensor error.
›Can I keep using the unit with ES?
No. Without the coil reading the unit cannot stop the coil freezing, so it stops.
