The fan that moves cold air from the freezer to the door ice maker is not turning. Frost or ice built up around the fan is the usual cause, often from a poor door seal or doors left open.

Likely causes

Listed from most to least common.

  1. Frost or ice built up around the ice maker fan
  2. Freezer or fridge door left open or not sealing
  3. Torn or dirty door gasket letting in warm, humid air
  4. Lots of warm food added at once
  5. Ice maker fan motor failed

How to fix the Er IF code

Unplug the refrigerator or switch it off at the breaker before removing any panel or filter.

  1. Step 1: Reset the refrigerator

Unplug the refrigerator or switch off its breaker for 2 minutes, then restore power. See if the code clears.

  2. Step 2: Empty the ice bin

If the code returns, move your food to a cooler, empty the ice bin and lay towels around the base of the fridge.

  3. Step 3: Defrost the ice maker area

Leave the refrigerator unplugged with the doors open for at least 8 hours so the frost melts. Do not use a hair dryer or heat gun.

  4. Step 4: Dry and restart

Wipe up the water, plug the fridge back in and allow 24 to 48 hours for normal ice making to resume.

  5. Step 5: Check the door seals

Close each door on a sheet of paper. If it slides out easily, clean the gasket or have it replaced so frost does not come back.

You'll need: Towels, cooler.

Parts that may need replacing

Check your model number on the label inside the door or on the back before ordering.

When to call a technician

If the code comes back after a full defrost, the ice maker fan motor or its wiring likely needs replacing by a technician.

A typical repair for this code costs $150–$350 in the US, including parts and labor. Prices vary by area and model.

Models this applies to

  • French door refrigerators (LF, LR and LM series)
  • Side-by-side refrigerators (LS and LRS series)
  • InstaView Door-in-Door models
  • Linear and inverter linear compressor models

Codes can differ slightly between models. Your owner's manual is the final word and is available from LG support.

Common questions

›Can I still use my LG fridge with an Er IF code?

Yes. The fridge and freezer usually keep cooling, but the door ice maker may slow down or stop until the fan works again.

›Why does Er IF keep coming back after I defrost?

Frost is likely returning because a door is not sealing, or the fan motor itself has failed. Check the gaskets first, then call for service.
