What the P1 code means

P1 on a GE Profile ClearView or GE ClearView window air conditioner means the pump that moves water out of the indoor section has had a problem or failed. The unit shuts off. GE's first fix is to drain the indoor side and clear the code.

The ClearView design straddles the window sill, so water that condenses on the indoor coil cannot simply run out the back like on a regular window unit. A small pump in the indoor section lifts it across to the outdoor side. The control watches the pump, and if it misbehaves it stops the unit and shows P1.

Debris caught in the drain filter plug is the simple cause. If cleaning it and resetting does not help, the pump has likely failed.

Common causes

Listed from most to least common.

  1. Drain pump filter (the plug behind the drain cap) clogged with debris
  2. Indoor pan overfilled in very humid weather
  3. Drain pump jammed or failed
  4. Pump wiring or control fault

How to fix the P1 code

Unplug the air conditioner or switch it off at the breaker before removing any panel or filter.

  1. Step 1: Turn off and unplug

Switch the unit off and unplug it. Put towels and a container under the right side of the indoor section.

  2. Step 2: Drain the indoor side

Remove the drain cap on the right side of the unit, then pull the filter plug straight out. Let all the water run out.

  3. Step 3: Clean the filter plug

Rinse the filter plug under the tap to remove lint and debris, then push it back in and refit the drain cap.

  4. Step 4: Clear the code

Plug the unit in and hold the DELAY button for 3 seconds to clear the error, as GE's manual says.

  5. Step 5: Watch for a repeat

Run the unit in Cool for a few hours. If P1 comes back, GE says the pump will need to be serviced.

You'll need: Container or shallow pan, towels.

Is a pump repair worth it?

ClearView units are newer, so many are still under GE's warranty. Check the date on your receipt before paying for a repair, and have the model and serial number from the rating label ready.

Out of warranty, a pump replacement is a mid-range repair. Ask for a quote and compare it with the price of a new unit before you book.

How to reset the GE air conditioner

  1. Turn the air conditioner off with the remote or the control panel.
  2. Unplug the unit for 5 minutes. If the power cord plug has a RESET button, press it when you plug back in. A wall unit on a dedicated circuit can be reset at the breaker instead.
  3. Plug it back in and turn it on. GE builds in a protective delay of about 3 minutes before the compressor starts, so give it time before judging.
  4. If the same code comes back straight away, the fault is still there. Work through the fix steps above, or call a technician.

When to call a technician

If P1 returns after draining and cleaning the filter plug, the drain pump needs service. The pump is inside the cabinet, so book GE Appliances service or an appliance technician rather than opening the unit.

A typical repair for this code costs $150–$400 in the US, including parts and labor. Prices vary by area and model.

Models this applies to

  • GE Profile ClearView and GE ClearView saddle window units (PHNT, AHTT)
  • Portable air conditioners (APCA, APCD, APSA, APWA series)
  • Through-the-wall and built-in wall units (AKCQ, AJCQ series)

Codes can differ slightly between models. Your owner's manual is the final word and is available from GE support.

Frequently asked questions

›What is the difference between P1 and FL on a ClearView?

FL means the indoor pan is too full. P1 means the pump itself had a problem. A full pan can follow a pump problem, so GE gives the same first steps for both.

›Can I keep using the ClearView with P1?

Not until it clears. The unit shuts off to stop water from overflowing indoors. If the code keeps coming back, leave it off until the pump is serviced.

›Which button clears P1?

GE's ClearView manual says to hold the DELAY button for 3 seconds after draining. If that does not work, unplug the unit for 30 seconds.
