What the E4 code means

E4 on a GE portable air conditioner means anti-freeze protection has kicked in. GE lists it in APCA, APWA and APSA manuals. The coil got cold enough to start icing, so the unit paused cooling. Poor airflow is the usual cause.

As the unit cools, the indoor coil runs below room temperature. If too little warm air passes over it, it can drop below freezing and ice over, which blocks the air even more. The coil sensor sees this and the unit stops cooling and shows E4 until the coil warms up.

You may notice weak, very cold air before the code, or water dripping as ice melts.

Common causes

Listed from most to least common.

  1. Air filters clogged with dust
  2. Air intake or outlet blocked by curtains or furniture
  3. Room already cool with the temperature set very low
  4. Fan set to Low in humid weather
  5. Low refrigerant from a leak

How to fix the E4 code

Unplug the air conditioner or switch it off at the breaker before removing any panel or filter.

  1. Step 1: Turn off and unplug

Switch the unit off and unplug it.

  2. Step 2: Clean the filters

Slide out the filters, vacuum them or wash them in warm water, and let them dry fully before refitting. GE's manual says not to run the unit without a filter.

  3. Step 3: Clear the airflow

Keep the unit a little way from walls and curtains so the intake and outlet are open.

  4. Step 4: Let any ice melt

Run the unit in Fan mode for 30 to 60 minutes so the coil warms up.

  5. Step 5: Restart with a higher fan speed

Go back to Cool mode with the fan on High and a moderate set point, such as 75°F.

You'll need: Vacuum with brush attachment.

How to reset the GE air conditioner

  1. Turn the air conditioner off with the remote or the control panel.
  2. Unplug the unit for 5 minutes. If the power cord plug has a RESET button, press it when you plug back in. A wall unit on a dedicated circuit can be reset at the breaker instead.
  3. Plug it back in and turn it on. GE builds in a protective delay of about 3 minutes before the compressor starts, so give it time before judging.
  4. If the same code comes back straight away, the fault is still there. Work through the fix steps above, or call a technician.

When to call a technician

If E4 keeps appearing with clean filters and good airflow, the unit may be low on refrigerant or have a fan or sensor fault. Book a technician. Refrigerant work needs an EPA-certified technician; never add refrigerant yourself.

A typical repair for this code costs Up to $350 in the US, including parts and labor. Prices vary by area and model.

Models this applies to

  • GE Profile ClearView and GE ClearView saddle window units (PHNT, AHTT)
  • Portable air conditioners (APCA, APCD, APSA, APWA series)
  • Through-the-wall and built-in wall units (AKCQ, AJCQ series)

Codes can differ slightly between models. Your owner's manual is the final word and is available from GE support.

Frequently asked questions

›Will E4 clear on its own?

Often yes. Once the coil warms up the unit can restart. Fix the airflow problem or it will happen again.

›Is E4 a fault?

It is a protection code, not a broken part. It becomes a fault only if it keeps returning with clean filters.

›How often should I clean the filters?

Every 2 weeks in heavy use is a good habit. Dusty filters are the most common reason a coil ices up.
