What the 53 code means

Error 53 on a Fujitsu air handler is a drain pump error. Fujitsu says it triggers when the float switch stays on for more than 3 minutes, meaning water is not leaving the drain pan. It applies to ceiling cassettes and ducted units with a drain pump.

A cassette sits in the ceiling below the level it drains to, so a small pump lifts the water out. A float switch in the drain pan rises with the water. If it stays up for more than 3 minutes, the board decides the pump is not keeping up.

Fujitsu's checks are the float switch for dust or blockages, its on/off switching, the drain pump connector and the drain hose.

Common causes

Listed from most to least common.

  1. Condensate drain line clogged with algae or sludge
  2. Drain pump failed or jammed with debris
  3. Float switch stuck or dirty
  4. Drain hose kinked or with no downward slope

How to fix the 53 code

Unplug the air conditioner or switch it off at the breaker before removing any panel or filter.

  1. Step 1: Turn the system off

Stop the unit and switch off the breaker.

  2. Step 2: Find the drain outlet

Locate where the condensate line ends, outside or at a floor drain. If no water drips while the unit runs in cooling, the line or pump is likely blocked.

  3. Step 3: Clear the outlet end

Pull dirt or algae from the open end. A wet/dry vacuum held over the outlet for a minute can pull out a soft clog.

  4. Step 4: Check for ceiling leaks

Look at the ceiling around a cassette for stains or drips. If you see water, leave the unit off and call for service.

  5. Step 5: Reset and test

Restore power, run Cool and check that water flows from the outlet.

You'll need: Wet/dry vacuum, flashlight, towels.

How to reset the Fujitsu air conditioner

  1. Turn the system off with the remote or wired controller.
  2. Switch off the breaker for the system, and the outdoor disconnect switch if there is one. Leave the power off for at least 5 minutes.
  3. Restore power and turn the unit back on. The compressor normally waits a few minutes before starting, so give it time before judging.
  4. If the same code or blink pattern comes back, the fault is still there. Work through the fix steps above, or call a Fujitsu contractor or other licensed HVAC technician.

Parts that may need replacing

Check your model number on the label inside the door or on the back before ordering.

When to call a technician

If 53 returns after clearing the outlet, a technician needs to check the float switch, the drain pump, its connector and the drain hose inside the unit.

A typical repair for this code costs $150–$600 in the US, including parts and labor. Prices vary by area and model.

Models this applies to

  • Halcyon wall-mounted mini-splits (ASU indoor, AOU outdoor)
  • Halcyon floor, ceiling cassette and slim duct units (AGU, AUU, ARU)
  • Halcyon multi-zone systems (RLF series)
  • Ducted and ceiling-suspended units (RGLX, RULX series)

Codes can differ slightly between models. Your owner's manual is the final word and is available from Fujitsu support.

Frequently asked questions

›How many blinks is error 53?

The operation lamp blinks 5 times and the timer lamp blinks 3 times, with the economy lamp flashing continuously.

›Will a Fujitsu wall unit show error 53?

Unlikely. Most wall units drain by gravity and have no pump. Error 53 is for units with a drain pump, such as cassettes and some ducted units.

›Why does error 53 show on humid days?

The coil makes the most water when it is hot and humid. A drain that keeps up on a mild day can fall behind when the load is high.
