What the P0 code means
P0 on a MRCOOL mini-split means the inverter module (IPM) has tripped on overcurrent. Gen 4 and Gen 5 units show it as PC 00. MRCOOL says it is often linked to unstable voltage, loose wiring, a compressor fault or a failing inverter module.
The IPM is the power module that drives the inverter compressor. It protects itself by shutting down when current spikes.
One P0 after a power event is not serious. Repeated P0 points to a failing module or compressor.
MRCOOL suggests checking whether the compressor tries to start at all. A compressor that hums and stops, or overheats, points to a compressor fault. One that never tries points more to the inverter module or its wiring.
Common causes
Listed from most to least common.
- Unstable or incorrect supply voltage
- Loose, burnt or damaged wiring
- Compressor overload or failure
- Inverter module failure
How to fix the P0 code
Unplug the air conditioner or switch it off at the breaker before removing any panel or filter.
Step 1: Reset the power
Turn off the breaker for at least 15 minutes, then turn it back on.
Step 2: Check the outdoor unit for airflow problems
Clear anything blocking the coil and fan. An overheating outdoor unit makes the compressor work harder.
Step 3: Note any power events
Tell the technician if the code appeared during a storm, brownout or outage.
Step 4: Book a repair if it returns
Testing the inverter module and compressor needs a technician.
How to reset the MRCOOL air conditioner
- Turn the mini-split off with the remote.
- Switch off the breaker for the system and the outdoor disconnect switch. MRCOOL suggests leaving the power off for 15 minutes so the boards fully reset.
- Restore power and turn the unit back on. The compressor normally waits about 3 minutes before starting, so give it time before judging.
- If the same code comes back straight away, the fault is still there. Work through the fix steps above, or call a technician.
When to call a technician
P0 involves the high-voltage inverter in the outdoor unit, which holds a charge after the power is off. Leave it to a licensed HVAC technician.
A typical repair for this code costs $400–$2500 in the US, including parts and labor. Prices vary by area and model.
Models this applies to
- DIY Series ductless mini-splits (Gen 1 to 5), single-zone and multi-zone
- Advantage Series mini-splits
- Olympus Series mini-splits
- EZ-PRO mini-splits
Codes can differ slightly between models. Your owner's manual is the final word and is available from MRCOOL support.
Frequently asked questions
›Does P0 mean the compressor is bad?
Not always. Voltage problems and a failed inverter module are also common. A technician can test both.
›Can a power surge cause P0?
Yes. MRCOOL lists voltage issues first. If a reset clears it and it does not return, keep an eye on it.
›Is P0 the same on a Gen 1 to 3 multi-zone?
No. On that outdoor display, P0 means compressor top high temperature protection.
›What voltage should my MRCOOL outdoor unit get?
MRCOOL says a 230V system should read about 240V across L1 and L2 at the outdoor unit, and a 115V system about 120V across L and N. Have an electrician or technician take these readings, as the terminals are live.
