What the F2 code means

F2 on a Frigidaire air conditioner is a freeze protection code. The coil has started to ice up, so the unit has paused cooling. Frigidaire says to let the unit defrost for 5 minutes, then reset it, and contact support if F2 returns.

When the coil gets too cold, moisture from the air freezes on it instead of draining away. The ice blocks the air, which makes the coil colder still. The unit stops cooling and shows F2 so the ice can melt.

Fix the cause, usually a dirty filter or low fan speed, or F2 will return on the next hot, humid day.

Common causes

Listed from most to least common.

  1. Air filter clogged with dust
  2. Airflow blocked at the front of the unit
  3. Low fan speed with a low set temperature
  4. Cool, humid weather
  5. Dirty indoor coil or low refrigerant

How to fix the F2 code

Unplug the air conditioner or switch it off at the breaker before removing any panel or filter.

  1. Step 1: Turn it off and let it defrost

Switch the unit off and leave it for at least 5 minutes, as Frigidaire advises. Longer is fine if you can see ice.

  2. Step 2: Clean the filter

While it defrosts, unplug it and wash or vacuum the filter. Let it dry before refitting.

  3. Step 3: Clear the airflow

Move curtains, blinds or furniture away from the front grille.

  4. Step 4: Reset and restart

Unplug for about 30 seconds, plug back in and run Cool with the fan on medium or high.

You'll need: Vacuum with brush attachment, towels.

How to reset the Frigidaire air conditioner

  1. Turn the air conditioner off with the remote or the control panel.
  2. Cut the power. Frigidaire says to unplug window and portable units for about 30 seconds. For a mini-split, turn off its breaker for a few minutes.
  3. Restore power and turn the unit back on. The compressor normally waits about 3 minutes before starting, so give it time before judging.
  4. If the same code comes back, the fault is still there. Work through the fix steps above, or contact Frigidaire support.

Parts that may need replacing

Check your model number on the label inside the door or on the back before ordering.

When to call a technician

If F2 keeps returning after defrosting with a clean filter, have the coil and refrigerant charge checked. Refrigerant work requires an EPA-certified technician.

A typical repair for this code costs $150–$500 in the US, including parts and labor. Prices vary by area and model.

Models this applies to

  • Window air conditioners (including Frigidaire Gallery)
  • Portable air conditioners
  • Ductless mini-splits

Codes can differ slightly between models. Your owner's manual is the final word and is available from Frigidaire support.

Frequently asked questions

›How long should I let it defrost?

Frigidaire says 5 minutes. If you can see thick ice on the coil, give it longer, or run Fan only until it is gone.

›Is F2 a sign the unit is broken?

Not usually. It is a protection code. It points to a fault only if it keeps coming back with good airflow.

›Why is water dripping inside after F2?

Melting ice can run off faster than the base pan drains. On a window unit, check it tilts slightly toward the outside so water runs out the back.
